2003年10月，一个叫George Johnston的人成功号召一些人用“miserable failure”(德收)这个关键词为锚文字，链接向美国白宫网站布什总统的个人介绍页(http:/www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html)。两个月后，在Google搜索“miserable failure”，布什的这个个人介绍页升到第一，搜“failure"”的时候也是第一。而在这个页面中，不论是miserable、failure，或是miserable failure，都没有出现过。

2006年9月，大白宮有人试图扭转Google炸弹所造成的影响，把介绍布什的这个网页做了S转向到介绍所有总统的一个通用页面(htp/www.whitehouse.gow/president)

结果跳转传输了链接权重和锚文字，这个并不是特别给哪一位总统准备的页面，在搜索miserable failure”时排到了第一。

2007年1月，Google对算法做了修正，防止Google炸弹的发生。对具体算法 Google并没做出解释，也不太可能解释，因为这涉及Google算法中非常核心的部分。

众所周知，链接是Google排名中最重要的因素之一，哪些链接会被赋予权重，哪些会被降权甚至忽略，Google当然不会告诉我们。

Google做了调整后，大部分Google炸弹现象消失了。搜索“miserable failure"时，白宫的页面已经找不到了。
 
一般猜想Google预防Google炸弹的改变有这么几项:

短时间内大量外部链接指向某个页面时，有可能是Google炸弹?这个页面并没有出现链接中所用的关键词销文字关键词锚文字是负面名词。

2007年4月，在Google搜索“failure”时，白宫的总统介绍页面再次排到了第一名不过这次是白宮自找的，因为他们在网页上放上了“failure”这个词

这样，本来与Failure这个词不相关的网页一下子变得相关了，预防ogle炸弹的算法失去了作用。
